Invitational winter training
MN Steel Hockey Club is opening a limited number of opportunities for players to train with us during the winter hockey season.
Our Winter Training program provides additional development for athletes who want more than their association or high school schedule alone can provide. Sessions will focus on individual skill development, skating, puck skills, shooting and scoring, decision-making, hockey IQ, compete habits, and game-transferable skills.
However, MN Steel Winter Training is not open registration.
Participation is invite and evaluation only.
We intentionally limit the number of players in our training groups because the quality of the athletes on the ice directly impacts the quality of the training environment.
We are not looking to fill every available spot.
We are looking for the right players.
THE MN STEEL STANDARD
We believe development requires more than talent.
We want athletes who want to be coached, want to compete, and want to be surrounded by other players who expect more from themselves.
Players considered for MN Steel Winter Training should demonstrate:
- Character — Respect teammates, coaches, opponents, officials, and the game.
- Coachability — Listen, accept feedback, make adjustments, and actively seek improvement.
- Compete — Bring intensity and effort regardless of the drill, score, or situation.
- Work Ethic — Be willing to do difficult things repeatedly in order to improve.
- Accountability — Own mistakes, learn from them, and eliminate excuses.
- Team First — Make the players around you better and contribute positively to the group.
- Attitude — Bring energy, focus, and a desire to train.
- Ability — Possess the skill and hockey foundation necessary to train at the pace of the appropriate group.
- Desire to Develop — Come to the rink with the purpose of becoming a better hockey player, not simply accumulating more ice time.
Talent alone is not enough.
A highly skilled player who negatively impacts the training environment is not what we are looking for.
We want players whose character, compete level, coachability, work ethic, and ability raise the standard of everyone around them.
HOW THE EVALUATION PROCESS WORKS
There is no cost to submit an Evaluation Request.
Players who are interested in Winter Training will provide information about their hockey background and current playing level. MN Steel staff will review each request and determine whether the player is a fit for one of our training groups.
Some players may be approved based on previous MN Steel evaluations or our staff's familiarity with the athlete. Other players may need to be evaluated before receiving an invitation.
Submitting an Evaluation Request does not guarantee acceptance into MN Steel Winter Training.
LIMITED AVAILABILITY
Winter Training groups will intentionally be kept limited.
Current MN Steel athletes will receive priority access. A limited number of opportunities will then be made available to new players who meet our standards and are approved by MN Steel staff.
Once a training group or individual session reaches capacity, additional approved players may be placed on a waitlist.
Our goal is not to maximize the number of athletes on the ice.
Our goal is to protect the pace, competitiveness, coaching quality, and development environment of every session.
FLEXIBLE DROP-IN TRAINING
Approved players will receive access to our Winter Training registration.
Training will be offered as individual drop-in sessions, allowing families to select the dates that work with their association or high school schedules.
There is no requirement to purchase the entire winter schedule.
Choose your sessions. Pay per session. Come ready to work.
Individual sessions will have limited capacity and may fill quickly.
WHAT PLAYERS CAN EXPECT
MN Steel Winter Training will challenge athletes technically, physically, and mentally.
Depending on the training group and session, development may include:
- Skating mechanics, edges, acceleration, and speed
- Puck control and handling at speed
- Passing and puck movement
- Shooting and scoring
- Position-specific skills
- Decision-making and hockey IQ
- Small-area games
- Battle and compete situations
- Game-transferable skill development
We don't believe development comes from simply putting players on the ice.
Every session should have a purpose.
MORE THAN WINTER TRAINING
Winter Training also gives MN Steel coaches an opportunity to identify and develop players who may be a strong fit for future MN Steel teams and programs.
For new players, this is an opportunity to experience our coaching, training environment, expectations, and development philosophy.
For our staff, it's an opportunity to learn more about the player than we could ever learn from a single tryout.
There is no obligation to play for MN Steel by participating in Winter Training.
But for athletes interested in future MN Steel opportunities, winter training provides our staff with another opportunity to see how a player trains, competes, responds to coaching, and interacts with teammates.
REQUEST AN EVALUATION
If you're looking for more ice time, there are plenty of places to find it.
If you're looking for an environment that expects you to work, compete, learn, and improve, we want to hear from you.
There is no cost to be considered.
